Siemens set to build first electric highway for trucks in Germany

German tech giant, Siemens is on track to build Germany's first eHighway which will accommodate electric freight transporters - a plan initiated in 2012. The highway will reportedly span a long stretch of about 10km.

The highway will be the first of its kind in Germany to be situated on a public motorway. Consequentially, the project would help reduce emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks that ply the roads daily. These trucks would source energy from overhead power lines that are mounted on the highway.

The trucks would be equipped with hybrid engines and would switch engines when on a road without the electrified overhead lines.

The development is billed to commence in 2018.
