A Town In France Just Unveiled The World's First Solar Road.

A small French town with a somewhat lengthy and quite special name just unleashed the power of technology to harness natural power sources such as the Sun.

French town just unveiled world's first Solar Road.

The town of Tourouvre-au-Perche in Normandy in France will henceforth worry less about stable power supply and power to supply street lights, as the sun would now suffice.

In a new development, the French government through its ecology ministry constructed a kilometer-long road with solar panels embedded in them, in a flat bed manner.

According to the Ecology Minister Ségolène Royal, it took five years to develop the road and total running cost was $5.2 million to produce and install the 30,000 square feet of solar panels. The panels are coated with a silicon resin that enables them to withstand the impact of passing traffic.

However, the panels are still incredibly expensive to produce in large quantities.
According to Engadget, they are also less efficient than conventional panels due to the manner in which they were placed - they're laid flat rather than angled for a better efficiency.
